Migrating from Microsoft Dynamics GP to Acumatica offers many benefits to organisations. While the advantages of moving to a modern, cloud based ERP are clear, one of the most common concerns during migration is how to handle historical transaction data. Migrating large volumes of legacy transactions can introduce risk and delay into a project—yet users still need access to that history after go live. To address this, we’ve developed a proof of concept that allows Dynamics GP data to be viewed directly from within Acumatica, without migrating all historical data into the new system. The Risk of Migrating Historical Data Data migration is often one of the highest risk aspects of an ERP implementation. Migrating years of Dynamics GP history can: • Increase the likelihood of data discrepancies • Require extensive reconciliation and validation • Extend project timelines In many cases, this historical data is static and required only for reference, supplier queries, or audit purposes. Migrating it purely to preserve visibility can increase risk without delivering equivalent value. Making GP Data Visible Without Moving It Our proof of concept takes a more controlled and pragmatic approach. Instead of importing historical payables data into Acumatica, Dynamics GP payables transactions are surfaced directly within the Acumatica user interface. When a user opens a vendor record in Acumatica, an additional tab displays the relevant GP transaction history for that supplier. Users can also drill down into individual GP transactions, giving them access to the detail they need while remaining within the Acumatica experience. Reducing the Need to Switch Between Systems One of the immediate benefits of this approach is a reduction in system switching. Rather than moving back and forth between GP and Acumatica to look up historical transactions, users can access legacy data from the record they are already working with. This improves efficiency, reduces disruption, and helps users stay focused during and after the migration. Secure Access Using Dynamics GP Authentication Access to historical data continues to be governed by Dynamics GP authentication. When a user accesses the GP data tab in Acumatica, they are prompted to authenticate against GP for that session. This ensures that: • Users only see GP data they are authorised to access • Existing GP security models remain intact • There is no over exposure of sensitive financial information From a risk and compliance perspective, this provides confidence that historical data remains protected while still being accessible through Acumatica. For organisations planning a move from Dynamics GP to Acumatica, this approach offers a safer, more measured path—delivering modernisation without introducing unnecessary risk.
